| 8-epi-PGF2a

8-iso-Prostaglandin F2α (8-epi-PGF2α) is an isoprostane generated through non-enzymatic peroxidation of arachidonic acid in membrane phospholipids. It exists in plasma both in esterified (bound to phospholipids) and free acid forms. Functionally, 8-epi-PGF2α acts as a weak thromboxane-prostanoid (TP) receptor agonist in vascular smooth muscle. Elevated levels of this compound serve as a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, hepatorenal syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain carcinogenic processes. Its measurement provides clinically relevant information about lipid peroxidation status in various oxidative stress-related disorders.
